L E T T E R from Jo – Leave Some Room

As an ex-Right Fighter, I know a thing or two about taking a position and holding on tight. Leaving no room for anything else at all – not your opinion, not your view, and don’t even say it, not even the chance I could be wrong *gasp*. Of course, being RIGHT is easily justified, for many reasons, after all, 1 + 1 = 2. It took me a while in this rational, data-driven world that actually 1 + 1 does not always equal 2. In fact, it can be better if it equals 3.

Holding tight to a position mostly leads to an unsatisfactory outcome. Once you take a position, you become stuck, frozen and set in stone. An immovable force that is taken out of flow. It is contraction, only seeing the parts of the story that makes it right for you. No consideration for possibilities, potential or imagination.

It is worth remembering that science is only now catching up to wisdom that has been around for over 5,000 years. Which makes it important to realise that there is always wriggle room for magic, the unexplained, the inconceivable, the unproven and the hidden aspect that is only just being revealed.

We will never, ever truly have the whole view of our slice of time, a moment seen from our own perspective. Which is why I’d like to suggest that we always leave some room. Some room to be not fully right, some room for creativity, some room to imagine a world expanded enough to hold it all, some room to connect and share and some room for the other person to be. It’s okay for us to do that.

I now quite happily subscribe to the philosophy of a Strong Opinion, Lightly Held after all I believe that anything could actually be possible, that the magic is there, and quite frankly, why would I say otherwise?

Love,

Jo x
